Lake Trail Loop Beauty Ranch to London Lake Professional Review and Guide
"Jack London acquired this property just west of Glen Ellen as a quiet, natural retreat. He soon became pre occupied with restoring the old ranchland back to a working farm, which he named Beauty Ranch. London built a lake in 1915 as a five-acre irrigation reservoir for the ranch. It quickly became a swimming hole and entertainment area for the Londons and their guests. The lake, now known as London Lake, sits at the foot of Sonoma Mountain surrounded by redwood groves. A redwood bathhouse on the northeast shore and a curved stone dam to the south were also built by London. Encroaching vegetation and sediment have since reduced the lake’s size in half. Cattails rim the shore and redwoods cover the mountain slope. This picturesque trail strolls through Beauty Ranch past London’s living quarters and the old ranch buildings, then loops around the lake to vista points and overlooks."
