Rae Lakes Loop (Backpacking) Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Without a doubt, the Rae Lakes Loop is one of the most popular backcountry trips in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. For those who don’t mind the company, the area offers some classic High Sierra scenery featuring crystalline, subalpine lakes that reflect an array of glacier-sculpted domes and jagged peaks. Beginning in the majestic setting of Kings Canyon, the route visits two major Sierra creeks (Woods and Bubbs), a significant waterfall (Mist Falls), and two beautiful meadows (Castle Domes and Lower Vidette). It also crosses a major Sierra pass (Glen Pass)."

"Many consider the Rae Lakes Loop the quintessential High Sierra trek. Certainly the route is among the most popular. Thousands of backpackers flock to the area every summer, routinely filling the daily quota for wilderness permits. The Rae Lakes area is blessed with subalpine scenery as fine as any in the Sierra, with crystalline lakes reflecting an array of glacier-sculpted domes and jagged peaks. Jaunts into the mountain splendor of the neighboring Sixty Lakes Basin offer more chances for discovering serenity away from the main trail." Read more

An incredible hike, especially the JMT portion. The Rae Lakes were quite crowded, however, and campsites were hard to find.
