This covers the first 3 miles of the hike. We were told to use this hike with a 10 year old girl that has made it to Paradise Valley before on trips with us. The Ranger assured us that this was an appropriate trip. All the maps that show the trail, show it going smoothly up and around the mountain and then climbing up and into deer cove creek. The Maps do not show all the switchbacks that you have to take straight off the begininig of the trail and continue gaining elevation until you finally peak an 1/8 or a mile from the cove where you head down about 100 feet to the creek. If you are going to take this trail, beware that for the most part it is an Uphill trip 70% of the trail. Once you do get to the ridge line, the trail you will follow will lead you to campsites but since you are close to ridge lines, you will most likely have wind for the night. Again since this is so remote not that many people take this, I would definately not take young adults on this trip due to the difficulty of the train in the beginining. Even if I had done this with adults, it isn't all that nice since you are in treeline and can't see much of the mountains around.

This review applies to the first 4 miles of this trail. The trail is very steep, gaining 3000 ft in elevation in 4 miles. The path isn't well maintained. However, the view of the valley was beautiful, and the sounds of the rushing King River at the bottom was delightful. Just be very good shape before approaching this trail.

Be in good shape for this hike. Especially if you are carrying significant weight, the last third of the hike to grizzly lake is grueling. However, the view is breathtaking and the path takes you to rugged territory far from the crowds. Definitely worth doing, but keep in mind that most of the 8.9 miles to grizzly lake is very steep.
