Barnabe Mountain Fire Road Professional Review and Guide
"The loop ride up to Barnabe Peak from the main area of Samuel P. Taylor State Park demands great stamina but little technical skill. Though the peak tops out at 1,466 feet, the highpoint of this counterclockwise loop sits just below it at about 1,400 feet. Starting from Papermill Creek within the park’s cool and shady main picnic area, the trail climbs 1,320 feet in about three unrelenting miles. Be sure to eat your Wheaties because some portions of the journey to the peak measures more than 13% steepness. For strong beginners, staying on your bike and not popping wheelies becomes the technical challenge of the day. The reward for all your grunting and groaning is a 2.5-mile downhill on a smooth wide fire road back to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard—you might not ever have to crank the pedal!"
