We didn't actually do this exact route. We entered at Lover's Camp and hiked on Canyon Creek trail to Little Elk Lake our first night. It was very steep with steps for much of the way and if you want to camp where there is good water, there are limited options. I think it was about 7.5 miles to Little Elk Lake and it was GORGEOUS! Great camp sites and a beautiful view! Then we hiked bak to the PCT along the rim and on to Red Rock Canyon trail. Canyojn Creek trail is prettier, but steeper. We camped along a creek probably only about 2 miles from the trail head at Lover's Camp, making a loop. It was very nice. We are going back in a few more weeks since we didn't hike down to Shadow Lake or Sky lakes. We regret that. Next time we'll spend 3 nights.
