Designated a primitive area in 1931 and established as one of California’s first wilderness areas in 1953, Marble Mountain Wilderness protects nearly a quarter million acres of pristine California. You might think that the deep lakes, striking mountains, lush forest, abundant wildlife, and isolation would attract droves of backpackers. But they don’t. You will ascend impressive cliffs of the Marble Mountains via serene Sky High Lakes Basin, a moderate overnight trip that could be done as a long, strenuous dayhike. This is (deservedly) the most popular hike in the wilderness, but crowds will be light relative to other alpine regions of the state. Fishing is possible in the Sky High lakes.

Nice trip. Watch out for Bigfoot. Don't expect solitude at Sky Lakes Basin - that's where everybody else seems to expect it. Once past, though, I didn't see many people. MY second night I camped at Marble Gap (pack water) and climbed Black Marble Mountain (class 3 or 4) for spectacular fun and views. If you don't feel comfortable climbing the peak, the gap is still a great place to spend the night (good views and no mosquitos).
