Mackerricher State Park Campgrounds Professional Review and Guide
"What campground sits near 8 miles of beach, a beautiful headland, rolling dunes, lowland forest, a freshwater lake, and hundreds of snoozing harbor seals? MacKerricher State Park Campground is cheek to jowl with all of the above."
--Jane & Hans Huber with Bill Mai, The Best In Tent Camping: Northern California (Menasha Ridge Press).
We camped here early April, in the rainy season on a Friday night and it was full. The area is nice because you are nestled in redwoods next to a gorgeous river, but even with plenty of trees and shrubs the sites are about 50 feet from each other so there is not much space or privacy. This is NOT the "best of tent camping in northern California". The way to truly tent camp out of a vehicle in California is to off-road it in the Trinity or Six Rivers National Forests using a map of the logging roads. Otherwise, no matter what campground you go to, it is essentially a parking lot full of RVs. The only other alternative to get into nature and actually camp is to backpack.
