High Point to Rock and Red Cap Lakes Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"About 1300 feet of this trip’s elevation change occur in the 0.6 mile from the top of the ridge above Red Cap Lake to the shore and back. Of course, you could skip Red Cap Lake and climb Salmon Summit instead, or head out along the ridge to Eightmile Camp, one of the most remote places you’ll ever find. However, if you skip Red Cap Lake, you’ll miss out on the chance to fish for some large eastern brook trout. The abundant meadows and open hillsides along this isolated section of the Salmon River Divide and the ridge south of Salmon Mountain are normally covered with a solid carpet of wildflowers, including many unusual and interesting species, around the end of June. Virgin, climax forest, predominantly composed of red firs, covers the remainder of the crest."
