Lunch in Ferndale Professional Review and Guide
"If 18 miles to Ferndale (including one sti? climb) doesn’t seem like enough work to whet your appetite for lunch, consider starting from downtown Eureka, following the route of Stage 3 on our California Coast multiday tour to the point where this route begins. That would add 10 miles each way for a 50-mile day. The goal today—the big payo?—is the village of Ferndale. But with any bike ride, it’s as much about the journey as it is about arriving, so let’s talk about how to get there.
The first 7 miles head south along Tompkins Hill Road, a small highway—flat, smooth, and straight—for the first 2 miles. Then it hits a couple of miles of lumpy rollers, and at mile 4, a steep climb: 650' up in 1.5 miles, averaging 8 percent with a few spots up into the low teens. That'll get your heart rate up! This ride would be considered “Easy” except for this climb."
