Manchester Reserve Professional Review and Guide
"One of Encinitass newest reserves, this oasis in the middle of town offers a brisk hike with a chance of wildlife sightings. The reserve is embraced by houses on three sides, with the lagoon below. For a relatively small open space, the reserve offers the chance to get your legs burning up a steep hill, wildlife that includes endangered species, and a pretty impressive view. Not bad for the middle of town."
--Lynn Goya and Alexander Goya, Best Hikes Near San Diego (Falcon Guides).
This is private land owned by the Center for Natural Lands Management in Temecuka. Just last week they dumped tons of bark beetle infested mulch and logs from another project onto this "Natural Habitat Conservation" area. Still awaiting its removal as random residents unknowingly transport beetle infested logs to their neighborhoods!
If you live close by, this is a nice little diversion. It's not a great hike or anything; just a nice walk through the preserve. If you're a jogger, the trails between here and the lagoon to the west of the freeway are pretty popular. Bird watching is good here too. It won't rank among your favorites unless you're a bird watcher or wildlife photographer, but it's definitely worth your time if you haven't been here before. It's easy for kids too.
