"Elkhorn Slough is a tidal inlet in Monterey Bay midway between Monterey and Santa Cruz. From Moss Landing, the main channel extends seven miles across 3,000 acres of marshland and tidal flats. The wetland supports more than 250 species of birds, 80 species of fish, and 400 species of invertebrates. This hike begins in the heart of the slough at the 1 ,700-acre Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. The trail leads to the five fingers of Parson’s Slough (a smaller side chan- nel), an overlook, and a wildlife blind. Five peninsulas jut out into the water, resembling five fingers for which they are named. The path winds through coastal marshland, meadows, native oak woodlands, and eucalyptus groves." Read more
