It is within Eldorado National Forest, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Granite Chief Wilderness, Desolation Wilderness, and Tahoe National Forest. It is 36.2 miles long and begins at 7,510 feet altitude. Traveling the entire trail is 72.9 miles with a total elevation gain of 15,328 feet. The Ski Patrol mountain rescue can be seen along the trail. There are also restrooms, meadows, a spring, and forests along the trail.
