Dewey Point Trail

Dewey Point Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is the easier of two routes to scenic Dewey Point, and it requires less than half the climbing effort of a start up the Pohono Trail, which begins at Discovery View at the east end of Wawona Tunnel, on the Wawona Road 1.5 miles west of the Bridalveil Fall parking lot entrance. Particularly in the summer, that longer route can be a hot climb. In contrast, yours is a much cooler, rolling traverse confined between 6770 feet and 7385 feet elevation. Because of the relatively gentle nature of the trail, it is suitable for both children and runners."

"Dewey Point and Crocker Point are two overlooks perched on the south rim of Yosemite Valley, 3,500 feet and 3,100 feet above the valley floor. From the overlooks are sweeping birds-eye views of the entire valley, including Tenaya Canyon, Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Cathedral Rocks, Cathedral Spires, Leaning Tower, Bridalveil Fall, Cascade Fall, Yosemite Falls, Three Brothers, El Capitan and Mount Hoffman."

We started at the McGurk Meadow trailhead on Glacier Point Rd. The trail leads to a beautiful meadow and then enters a forest. The trail was blocked a number of places by fallen trees which might not be so easy to negotiate with a full backpack (we only had daypacks). After what seemed like more than the stated 4 miles we reached Dewey Point. I couldn't believe how magnificent the view was! Breathtaking! And well worth the hike out to the point. We were there on the Thursday before Memorial Day, late in the afternoon and there was no one else on the trail. There were small patches of snow, but none that were on the trail. We're thinking we may return and make it a backpacking trip visiting Taft Pt. and Crocker Pt.
