This is a great trail for beginners to intermediate and dog lovers. Last week, my sister and i took our dogs just down to echo lakes and after realizing how easy that trail was we headed up the face of becker peak. This is NOT the way to to go, but we got a work out in. When i came home i researched how to snowshoe this trail and headed back up. I agree with Angus, the turn off is hard to find, but we turned up where the road uturns down to the lake..We took a very steep diagonal up and found the ridge. We took the ridge about a 1/2 mile to the diagonal slope to the summit. Unfortunately, 61 degrees made it very slushy and very slippery on the 45 degree angle up. We stopped 200 feet short of the summit. It was beautiful though. Alternating view of melting echo lake (blue shinning through) and tahoe, and not a soul insight. Dog lovers paradise to let rover run free. I would try this again, only when it is 45 degrees or colder, the steep slope was just to wet and gave way with each step. I would also head up the ridge early, where the first road veers off to the left and just follow the ridge. Better work out, less time on echo lakes road and more back country time. :-)

If I had known where exactly to turn away from Echo Lake Road it would have been much more enjoyable. You have to turn away from the road into the woods before you reach the MUNI village houses (there is a big sign on the right side of the road after approx. 3/4 miles). When you can see the lake, you already have gone approx 1200 ft too far.
Otherwise, impressive views on a less traveled trail.
