Explore Rock City’s Wind Caves, sandstone rock outcrops that have been sculpted by wind, water, and time, then head off on an easy, secluded walk through the woods to a viewpoint at the end of West Fossil Ridge. These two trails explore vastly different landscapes within a small section of the park. You can take the trails in either order, or simply do one or the other. Rock City will delight children, so if one hike is all your family can manage, stick with it. Hardier children of all ages will enjoy linking the two. The Rock City exploration is presented first, followed by a description of the West Fossil Ridge Trail. To reach the Wind Caves and Sentinel Rock, head up and right (north) on the dirt track alongside the paved roadway. Lots of social trails intermingle in this area; if you head left (west) toward the first obvious rock formations, you can scramble down to the Elephant Rock Picnic Area and its huge cave-like alcove with sandstone “tusks” overhanging the entrance.
