This is probably the flattest of any of the longer hikes possible within Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Instead of climbing a mountain or a mesa, the route follows, for the most part, the gentle valleys of Stonewall Creek and the upper Sweetwater River. Most of the elevation gain takes place in the first 3 miles. The loop portion of the route described below is allowable for mountain bikers, but only if they begin and return to the Camp Cuyamaca school camp near park headquarters, staying on fire roads the entire trip. Cold Spring Trail is off-limits to mountain bikers.
