Los Penasquitos Canyon—East Approach Trail

Los Penasquitos Canyon—East Approach Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Take along a picnic lunch and a blanket on this hike. There are many fine places—sunny meadows, oak-shaded flats, and the sycamore-fringed streamside— to stop for an hour’s relaxation. A good turnaround point is a small set of waterfalls and pools in the canyon bottom. This is about 3 miles out, midway through the Los Penasquitos preserve."

"Crickets sing, cicadas buzz, and bullfrogs groan. A sparrow hawk alights upon a sycamore limb, then launches with outstretched wings to catch a puff of sea breeze moving up the canyon. A cottontail rabbit bounds across the trail, and stops to take your measure with a sidelong stare. Los Penasquitos Creek slips silently through placid pools and darts noisily down multiple paths in the constriction known as the falls."
"Popular for mountain biking and equestrian use, and featuring a year-round creek and waterfall, 3,720-acre Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve is a favorite of San Diego urbanites looking for an extended backyard in which to exercise. The “no bicycle” offshoot paths looping out from the main trail offer a wilderness feel in this wide-open preserve in the heart of San Diego."
