As “little brother” to Los Penasquitos Canyon, Lopez Canyon gets relatively little use and offers more solitude. Lopez is dry most of the year, but the sights and smells of sage and chaparral and the stately sycamores down along the creek bed create a sense of a time long past when vaqueros herded cattle through this and many other coastal canyons. Cattle were grazed in both canyons until the late 1980s, a tradition that stretched back to the Spanish and Mexican periods.
