Del Mar Crest and Beach

Del Mar Crest & Beach Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Combining canyon, crest, and sandy strand, this loop hike touches on every natural landscape that the woodsy community of Del Mar has to offer. The tide line scenery along the route is some of the best in San Diego County.

Be aware, though, that high tides, particularly in winter, can flood the beach segment of the route. Check tide tables first if you expect to travel along the sand. If the tides do flood the beach, there is a not-as-pleasant alternate route to consider and another choice not to consider."

As a beginning hiker, I thought this was great. Some of the views are spectacular and the inclines were not overly steep. I do have to say though, that the trails were not well-marked (signs) in a lot of places, and not very well-maintained. I could see how these could be a huge problem for somebody with weak ankles. Also, a lot of the sage brush along all of the paths is very grown over. You can still see the path and get through it, but you want to be sure to wear at least a T-shirt and longer pants. This hike might be a bit more painful in shorts and a tank top as you will come back pretty scratched up.
