The Racetrack Trail Professional Review and Guide
"The Racetrack is more of an experience had by walking than by hiking. There is no real trail here, other than where visitors decide to go. The playa receives its moniker from the bizarre tracks left by rocks which have sailed across it, leaving blazed paths and trails in the earth. Somehow the rocks—which vary in weight from a few pounds to several hundred—move. No one has seen them do so, or recorded their movements, but the tracks are there, some hundreds of yards long. Many of the grooves run parallel, while others cross and crisscross. Some tracks abruptly change direction at right angles, while others meander in curvy patterns."
--Allen Riedel, 100 Classic Hikes in Southern California (The Mountaineers Books).
