Keane Wonder Mine

Keane Wonder Mine Professional Review and Guide

"An old mining road in the Funeral Mountains leads to the historic ruins of mines, a mill, and tramways. The route is steep and rocky, and the scenic views down the canyon to Death Valley are dramatic. (See note below; check with the park service to see if the site is open.)

The Keane Wonder Mine was developed at a time and in a location of hundreds of gold, silver, and lead strikes. The relative success of this venture makes its history and today’s ruins all the more intriguing. It all began in 1903 with an almost-unheard-of lucky strike by an unemployed Irish miner named Jack Keane and his partner. After months of futile searching for silver, Keane accidentally stumbled across a huge ledge of gold, calling the find the “Keane Wonder Mine” out of his total astonishment at being so fortunate."
