Fort Funston & Daly City - San Mateo Beaches and Coastal Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Thornton Beach, slated to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is a remnant of a once-popular state beach. There is no official access from the former park’s entrance off Skyline Boulevard in Daly City, but limited access is available on a trail from the horse stables on Olympic Way north of the old park entrance. This half-mile collection of sand dunes below the bluffs is flanked on the north by Fort Funston and at very low tides by narrow, sandy beaches extending south to Mussel Rock. A segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the Coastal Trail follows a 1.2-mile sandy trail up and down the dunes from Fort Funston in San Francisco south to Thornton Beach. Both trips begin from Fort Funston in San Francisco only, thus making it a 2.4-mile round trip. This trail guide includes A Round Trip along the Strand."
