A visit to the Picchetti Ranch is an opportunity to enjoy the flavor of a foothill winery and ranch of the late 1800s, an experience now all but vanished. The ranch was in the Picchetti family from the 1870s until the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District acquired it in 1978.Vincenzo Picchetti came to the Santa Clara Valley from Italy in 1872, and soon after bought the ranch and planted orchards and vine- yards on its hillsides. Early family quarters, the family home, the winery, and the orchards remain. Today the buildings of the Picchetti Ranch form the centerpiece of the preserve. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and in the Santa Clara County Resource Inventory, these buildings were restored with grant funds for historic preservation. The first to be completed was Homestead House, built by the Picchetti brothers in 1882, as a temporary home. Later it housed ranch hands, and was used as storage for gallon wine jugs and even an aviary. This trail guide includes the following trails: A Stroll to Picchetti Pond and a Hilltop View, The Zinfandel Trail to Stevens Creek County Park.
