Mill Creek Campground, also known as Del Norte Campground, is a pretty forest campground in a shaded stream canyon. Take away the redwoods, and this feels like eastern forest. With all the maples, it could be Pennsylvania. Miles off US 101, Mill Creek is quiet. The private campsites are backed off in their own little corners. In the summer, when everybody is on the road camping, Mill Creek fills up slowly. It is close to the Klamath River for river adventure. Crescent City is available for an emergency junk-food run—or to buy fresh fish fillets to fry back at camp. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is just south for trips to see the elk, or you can spend days on Gold Bluffs Beach, the most beautiful undeveloped stretch of sandy beach in California.
