Halfmoon Lake

Halfmoon Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Halfmoon Lake is set in an amphitheater of granite walls sculpted by vanished rivers of ice. Its shallow basin and lower elevation create relatively warm water temperatures. Head for Halfmoon Lake via Woodchuck Lake and then make a semi-loop on the return via Chimney Lake."

The first day was 11.3 mi. but the guide says 8. woodchuck lake is nice. Its a long day because you gain over 3000 ft. Woodchuck to Halfmoon was easy but there was still lots of snow on the trail so we lost our way a little bit. The view coming down from Crown pass is awsome. Plan to spend a day at Halfmoon because the lake is beautiful. This is probably the best backcountry lake I've been to. The time of year I went was perfect because there were two water falls that were flowing into the lake. There were several campsites with the best one being one the semi peninsula. The water was warm enough to swim in and there were plenty of fish. The trail from Halfmoon to Chimney lake is easy but sometimes hard to find. Chimney lake is not a nice lake. There were beer cans and evidence of many camp fires. There was also nearly infinite mosquito's so I would highly recommend going back to Woodchuck lake and making it an out and back trip. I guarantee you that it will be better than visiting Chimney lake. However I did not visit Marsh lake so it may be nice I don't know.
