El Cariso Truck Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"The El Cariso Nature Trail is a self-guiding loop that begins at the El Cariso Fire Station and visitor center on the Ortega Highway. The easy trail circles a knoll with north, west, and south vistas, meandering through Coulter pines, incense cedar, cypress, oaks, manzanita, coastal sage, and scrub oak. An interpretive pamphlet describes the surrounding geology, plants, and animals. Before setting out, ask for the self-guiding pamphlet at the visitor center.

From the west (right) side of the El Cariso Visitor Center, walk up the stone steps to the signed trail. Follow the dirt path up the west-facing hillside on an easy grade through a grove of oaks and pines. Views extend across the rolling hills and surrounding mountain peaks."

"If you’re unfamiliar with the natural history of the Santa Ana Mountains, stop first at El Cariso Visitor Center along Ortega Highway. Inside the small center (open on weekends), you’ll find some small but instructive exhibits on the local flora, fauna, and geology. To learn even more, walk the El Cariso Nature Trail, which begins just
behind the visitor center."

"For a family-friendly exploration of the native flora and wildlife of the Santa Ana Mountains, take a hike on El Cariso Nature Trail. The path loops through a variety of flowering shrubs from sage to chamise. Larger floristic highlights include Coulter pines (so-called “penny pines”) planted here, though native to the area. A scattering of oaks and cedar join the pines. Before you head down the trail, drop into the visitor center at El Cariso Ranger Station. Interpretive exhibits explain the mountain range’s ecology and ecology. Pick up a pamphlet (not always available) that points out the highlights of the self-guided trail."

"El Cariso Nature Trail is an ideal short hike for families.
With striking vistas to the north, west, and south, it winds
around a large knoll above the El Cariso Ranger Station,
which is just south of the Ortega Highway."
