Jakey Lake is embedded so deeply in the backcountry that hiking to its shores is akin to stepping back in time. The route is so little used that the only signs of life I saw on the winding, overgrown trail were the scat of forest animals, and the prints of deer and something with claws—raccoon? Wildcat? Coyote? Baby bear? Regardless, there was nary a waffle stomp in sight, let alone a person in the flesh. If you thrive on solitude, this trail’s for you. Highlights: Chances are that even in the height of the summer season, you’ll have lonely Jakey Lake all to yourself.
