Whale Rock Reservoir is open to the public during the trout fishing season. The trail alongside the lake is primarily used as a fishing access, but is also a beautiful area for hiking and picnicking. The Whale Rock Dam was built in 1961, creating the 1350-acre reservoir. It is a domestic water supply used as a source of drinking water. The lake is fed from Old Creek and Cottontail Creek at the two northern points. The lake is surrounded by grassy rolling hills.

This trail is closed from November to April, per the sign on the locked gate at the trailhead. Wish our trail planner had read the Trails.com guide which clearly states this information. That way, our group wouldn't have shown up on a cold blustery day for nothing. We hiked Black Hill instead, which was a nearby alternative.
