Bort Meadow Trail

Bort Meadow Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"It’s hard to imagine that a place so wild and so rugged exists so close to the hustle and bustle of downtown Oakland. But Bort Meadow is a magical place where you can pretend you’re a Wild West settler seeking fame and fortune. This hike features a lush grassland ringed by redwoods and eucalyptus, where you’re bound to see an abundance of wildlife, including quail, bobcat, deer, coyote, and a number of raptors circling above. This hike can get very hot in the summer, so it’s best to stick to visits from September through June. In spring, you’ll have the chance to walk through an expanse of wildflowers."

The first half of the trail was very sunny, very little trees so I''d recommend going early if it''s any warmer than 70 degrees. The second half of the loop we chose was shady and beautiful. The water in the creek is dried up but still pleasing to see.

It was a good hike for me and my dog Blaze, it gave us a good workout, i got lost once during the hike, i saw the stone bridge, but before i crossed it i turned to the left up the hill at brandon trail and walked for an hour when i realized i should have went past the bridge then up jackson grade, anyway, the scenery was beautiful, there were cows in the first mile of the hike through the first 2 gates, we saw a bobcat, a deer, and some maybe i think they were hawks flying above us, and there were an abundance of colorful flowers around us.
