Castle Dome Professional Review and Guide
"A good warm-up before climbing Mount Shasta—or a good cool-down the day after a Shasta ascent. Surreal granitic terrain, where sharp cliffs alternate with rounded bulges. This climb is of an entirely different nature than those of the Shasta or Lassen volcanoes. The dome affords incredible views of Shasta and the surrounding country. You’re probably in this part of California to climb Mount Shasta or Mount Lassen—or maybe you’re a peak-bagger, heading south on Interstate 5, whose attention has been grabbed by the magnificent granite domes just west of the highway. In either case don’t pass by Castle Dome, which stands in sharp contrast to the otherwise rolling volcanic terrain of the area. Castle Dome provides an enjoyable afternoon hike. If you’re a rock climber, you’ll find a wealth of seldom-climbed, classic granite in the area as well."
