Most of the campgrounds described in this section of the book are in the Angeles National Forest, 1,000 square miles of wilderness running almost the entire width of northern Los Angeles County. As the backyard of the nation's second largest city, the forest hosts millions of visitors every year. A landscape of rugged mountains, canyons, streams, and lakes, it attracts outdoor enthusiasts year-round. More than 500 miles of trails, 60 campgrounds, and dozens of fishing streams lure diverse groups seeking to hike, fish, swim, hunt, ride horseback, mountain bike, backpack, drive off-highway-vehicles, and camp. Winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy the facilities of nine major ski areas. Many campgrounds serve as excellent bases or starting points for wilderness adventures in this diverse region, although many are closed or inaccessible during the winter. Three major lakes in the region provide year-round water sports. Castaic and Pyramid Lakes, north of Santa Clarita, feature well-developed state park facilities. Smaller Bouquet Reservoir provides a more isolated experience. For an experience of a different kind, the world-famous Six Flags Magic Mountain Amusement Park lies just west of Santa Clarita. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Los Almos, Hardluck, Oak Flat, Cienega, Prospect, Cottonwood, Upper Shake, Sawmill, Zuni, Streamside, Spunky, Live Oak, and Soledad.
