Tarpits Park

Carpinteria, California

Tarpits Park Professional Review and Guide

"Tarpits Park is an 8-acre blufftop park at the east end of Carpinteria State Beach. The park was once the site of a Chumash Indian village. It is named for the natural tar that seeps up from beneath the soil. The Indians used the tar for caulking canoes and sealing cooking vessels. Interconnecting trails cross the bluffs overlooking the steep, jagged coastline. Benches are placed along the edge of the bluffs."
