Tanbark Trail to Tin House

Carmel, California

Tanbark Trail to Tin House Professional Review and Guide

"The 3,762-acre Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park lies along ten miles of beautiful Big Sur coast backed by 3,000-foot ridges. The Tanbark Trail is a steep climb up Partington Canyon to a grassy meadow with spectacular coastal views from the abandoned Tin House. The house was built during World War II on a 1 ,950- foot ridge. The path parallels Partington Creek through a dense forest of huge redwoods, tanbark oaks, and a lush understory of ferns. Switchbacks lead up the canyon wall to the ridge separat- ing Partington and McWay Canyons in the heart of the park. The hike can be combined with the Fire Road Trail—Hike 1 1 9—for a 6.4-mile loop."
