Old Coast Road Northern Access

Old Coast Road: Northern Access Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Old Coast Road was the original coastal route connecting Carmel with Big Sur before the Bixby Bridge was completed in 1 932. The hike begins at the frequently photographed Bixby Bridge—at the north end of the Old Coast Road—and follows the twisting, unpaved back road through a shaded canyon dense with coastal redwoods and lush ferns. The trail parallels Bixby Creek and Sierra Creek and crosses two bridges over the Little Sur River. The road is open to the public but is bordered by pri- vate property. The hike may be combined with Hike 1 06 for a 1 0.2-mile shuttle hike with the road’s southern access."

"A convenient, relaxing drive through moss-covered sycamore and redwood forest. Enjoy pastoral scenes and intermittent views of the Pacific Ocean from high hills above Highway 1. Close to Andrew Molera State Park. A wide, well-graded shelf road, steep in places with no guard rails. Do not drive when wet. Suitable for most passenger cars."

Beautiful views everywhere. Any passenger car could make it so if you''re looking for something challenging this isn''t it. Definitely go if your looking for a scenic drive off the proverbial beaten path.

A Great drive to get started with your offroad experience, mild terrain mostly packed dirt road. The trail runs up the mountains and through redwood groves with running water streams. Amazing views of the pacific coast and forests.

I would recommend starting at the southern point and work your way back up north, that way you will get to see the best views of the Bixby Bridge which is a must stop for photos!

Make sure to add one or two of the many short hikes that go off HWY 1 down to the rocky coast line (they are easy to spot by the cars parked on the side of the highway) to enjoy breath taking views of the pacific coast.

Nice scenic drive. Rough road but any vehicle should be able to drive it just fine. Took about an hour to drive, stopped for pictures a couple times. Saw some deer on the trail but they quickly disappeared into the woods. Will do again someday.

Not my favorite - but my 25 yr old son's favorite - and I don't have an off-road great vehicle (Toyota Sienna mini-van) - but no great angst - not too difficult. We met no-one on the road! Solitude.

An easy, beautiful drive through the hills with excellent ocean views from the ridge tops. Watch for hikers and mountain bikers on the narrow road.
