Carmel Meadows

Carmel Meadows Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Carmel may be a world-class destination for its vibrant Euro village vibe bloated with gourmet restaurants, art galleries, and exclusive shops, but its inimitable location tucked between the untamed Pacific and swaths of pristine vegetated habitat is what gives it unique appeal to nature lovers.

This is one of the California coast’s premier trails overlooking Carmel Bay, two beaches, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and Point Lobos. Views across the Carmel River lagoon’s picturesque wetlands and east up the bucolic hillcradled Carmel Valley only sweeten the panoramic pot."

"This hike combines beach and bluff trails along Carmel River State Beach at the south end of Carmel. The Carmel River flows through the north end of this 1 06-acre state beach, forming a lagoon and bird sanctuary. The beach is bordered on the south by Point Lobos State Reserve (Hikes 88–94). The hike connects Carmel Meadows, in the grassland bluffs, to San Jose Creek Beach, locally known as Monastery Beach (named after the Carmelite Monastery in the hills above). A short side trip leads to Portola-Crespi Cross, the site where the Portola-Crespi Expedition erected a cross to signal passing ships in 1 769. From the cross are panoramic views of Carmel Bay, the bird sanctuary, the surrounding mountains, and Point Lobos." Read more
