17-Mile Drive to Carmel Road Ride

17-Mile Drive to Carmel Road Ride Professional Review and Guide

"Never mind that this is a road ride. The famed 17-Mile Drive is a ride that’s rated as one of the Top 100 routes to pedal in America. If this is your first time to the Monterey Peninsula, this ride is an outstanding way to see a variety of sights. This ride includes only a nine-mile stretch of the 17-Mile Drive loop (by far the most stunningly scenic portion of that entire loop). Ranging from zero to 150 feet above sea level, the entire route rises and fall over such a wide range that you could easily say it’s mostly flat. Rises are moderate with a few slightly steeper but short hills. The first seven miles is graced with a comfortably wide bike lane. The last 7.5 miles follows narrow and often shoulderless roads. Fortunately, the roads are curvy and that effectively helps to keep speeding motorists at bay. Starting from Lovers Point in unpretentious Pacific Grove, the route follows the rugged shoreline on Oceanview Boulevard and Sunset Drive before turning into the gated community of 5,300-acre Pebble Beach."

After having driven this ride for so many years, it was fantastic to finally cycle the route! The coastal scenery is amazing and made all the more dramatic when thick fog is around, as it was for my ride. A little chilly to start out with so always pack a good wind breaking cycle jersey for the ride. Plenty of places to pop in for a warming cup of coffee or hot chocolate in Carmel. Would highly recommend it to anyone who has time to take in all the glorious sites of the carmel and monterey coast line

Beautiful scenery. A bit chilly. Could have used arm warmers. Made a mistake and went into Spanish Bay GC instead of Spanish Bay Dr. and spent about 1 hr on the course looking for the trail/street. Very slight hills. Bike route on most of the ride. Very courteous drivers. Saw lots of flora and fauna. Highly recommended.

Rode down Forest to Lover's Point, rode Oceanview to Sunset. Entered 17 Mile Drive at Sunset entramce. breathtaking views of Spanish Bay. Ate lunch at Sand Point. Tried to ride into Cypress Golf Club- must be member I guess :-( Cotinued past Pebble Beach Lodge and on back to Carmel. Ride time: 2.5 hours.
