Garland Ranch Regional Park is home to several different habitats. This hike includes a sampling of several ecosystems. The hike begins at the Carmel River and crosses Lupine Meadow into a shady canyon. The trail then climbs the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains through oak groves and open chaparral to an old homestead site. The return route winds through a lush, narrow canyon to Fern Pond, a circular pond rimmed with trees and a variety of ferns.
