Church Creek Canyon is rich with massive sandstone formations, including caves, rock shelters, arching overhangs, and ancient pictographs from the Esselen people. This hike descends on Church Ranch Road, a gated dirt road overlooking the scenic canyon. The lightly traveled road, branching from Tassajara Road, winds down the brushy slope on an easy grade. The trail offers outstanding vistas but little shade. The road descends to Church Creek, a tributary of the Arroyo Seco that forms at Church Creek Divide. The 4-mile-long creek merges with Tassajara Creek on its journey to the ocean. A trail parallels Church Creek in an open forest of black oaks, Coulter pines, and Santa Lucia firs.
