Wheeler Lake

Wheeler Lake Professional Review and Guide

"This pleasant hike to pretty Wheeler Lake is a peaceful journey through a lovely forest dotted with occasional meadows and creeks. The southern Mokelumne Wilderness is a more subdued environment than other corners of the large Central Sierra wilderness. There are no high peaks like those that hold commanding positions above the northern and eastern sides of the wilderness.

Instead, the south side is a region dominated by the usual Central Sierra combination of granite bedrock overlaid by prehistoric volcanic mudflows. The creeks here originate high in the volcanic terrain and drain northward through the granite bedrock to the North Fork of the Mokelumne River."
