San Simeon Trail

San Simeon Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The San Simeon Trail leads through a diverse landscape of coastal scrub, grassy meadows, wetlands, a Monterey pine forest, a eucalyptus grove and riparian woodlands. This loop hike includes footbridges and boardwalks, interpretive displays, outcroppings, vernal pools of winter rainfall, benches and Whitaker Flats, an 1800s ranch site."

The trail guide is very accurate in the description of the hike, but it can't be overstated how wonderful this little hike is to take. We caught sight of several deer at Whitaker Flats, outlined by the large rock outcropping nearby. The pines were particularly fascinating in that they were draped with long strands of moss which created a dark curtain which, with the density of the trees, made that section of the hike deeply shaded. At times the trail is a bit difficult to follow since the area is rarely frequented and I imagine deer and other critters make their own across the grassy meadows. That being said, don't expect to get lost because you're never far from sight of Hwy 1, the Whitaker campground and the park's access roads. It should be noted that there are bathrooms at the campground which are very convenient. After finishing the hike, be sure to walk westerly towards the beach by crossing under Hwy. 1. It's not a "destination hike" but if you're in the area, be sure to stop and enjoy this entry into the varied terrain offered in this portion of the coast.

Although on this trail you are never far from civilisation, you passed through some interesting flora landscapes and the trail is well marked and shows you which animals and plants to look out for. It was a fairly gentle up and down hike with some lovely views from the upper meadows. You end up on the beach which is a great way to finish. Although very accessible, I only passed 2 other hikers in the 3.5 mile jaunt.
