Other destinations in the Trinity Alps are more spectacular. Other creeks are bigger, other drainages longer. But for a pleasant place to spend a few days immersed in mountain splendor, it’s hard to beat Union Creek. The approach is more like a walk in the park than an alpine hike. After 6 gently ascending miles, you find yourself in a sprawling meadow at the heart of a perfectly proportioned valley: a sparkling creek here, a sweet-smelling forest of Jeffrey pines there, a field of wildflowers over here. Highlights: An often-overlooked trail to one of the Alps’ most underrated valleys.
