This trip follows a shortcut to Grizzly Lake. The only positive aspect to the grueling, hot, and dry climb over the Salmon River divide is that at least there’s some shade on the north side. Get an early start to avoid climbing the open, brushy slope under the blistering afternoon sun. The popularity of this route has grown exponentially during the last couple decades. Apparently, many backpackers don’t mind the combination of a long drive and a tough climb. Don’t expect to be alone during peak season.
