Mormon Rocks Nature Loop

Cajon Junction, California

Mormon Rocks Nature Loop Professional Review and Guide

"At the junction of Interstate 15 and Route 138, oddly tilted sedimentary rock formations stand sentinel below Cajon Pass. Officially named Rock Candy Mountains, but locally known as the Mormon Rocks, the formations have been riddled with holes by strong winds and weather. Lizards, owls, and pack rats make their homes in these small caves. The wild contortions of the San Andreas Fault have thrust these cemented sandstone beds upward toward the sky. Although the Mormon Rocks appear to be weather-worn and crumbly, they remain standing because they erode more slowly than the sand and silt of the alluvial flats of the Cajon Canyon Wash."
