"A historic ranch tucked away in a valley south of Half Moon Bay now belongs to the California State Park system. In the 1860s this was a working ranch, growing hay and grazing cattle. Mills Creek, named for Robert P. Mills, the first owner of the ranch, flows through the narrow valley. An arched stone bridge crosses this creek to an old barn and a bunkhouse remaining from the ranching days. The State of California received the donated property in 1983 and later added a parcel known as Rancho Raymundo extending east to Skyline Boulevard. The ranch is named for one of the last of many owners of the property, Burleigh Hall Murray. The state is preserving the 1121-acre park for its historical interest, with an emphasis on interpreting early San Mateo County ranch life. The historic buildings, unparalleled on the north San Mateo County coast, will be restored; they made roof repairs and preserved the stone walls and arched stone bridge. The farm lands are returning to their natural state and protecting the sensitive riparian habitat is a priority. This trail guide includes the following trails: Explore the Historic Ranch." The first mile of this trail, to the old barn, is on a loose gravel road. It is easy enough to walk, but noisy and loose footing. The first 1/2 mile is open with no shade. The vegetation is thick on both sides of the road, with periodic blackberry bushes. There is also abundant poison oak. The old barn is interesting, though hard to see into. Just past the barn the trail stopped in a wall of vegetation, so we were unable to go to the water tanks. This path appears to have suffered from a few years of neglect, though there was a crew in cutting weeds when we left.
