Set down by three tiny jade lakes on the backside of Yosemite, Trumbull Lake Campground is getting popular. It is primitive (no showers), but most of the campsites are reservable. People come back every year. The store in the nearby Virginia Lakes Resort sells beer, ice, and basic supplies. The access road is paved and straight. The fishing is good, the hiking superb. Views of the snowy mountains rising around the three lakes take your breath away. Everybody you meet is complicit, because they are in on the secret that this is the most beautiful spot on earth. The campground is on a slope above Trumbull Lake. The tiny lake by the Virginia Lakes Resort is over the hill, and the third lake is just a few hundred yards up the gravel road. The campground is like a scruffy dog. You don’t like the way it looks, but after a while you learn to love it.
