Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area: Gecko Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The Imperial Dunes, the largest sand dunes in California, cover an area 40 miles long and 5 miles wide along the eastern border of Imperial Valley. Shifting sands continually build and topple dunes rising more than 300 feet high over an area of 180,000 acres. Summer temperatures can reach 110°F, and annual rainfall is less than 2 inches. The most popular activity in the dunes is OHV driving, and two-thirds of the recreation area permits this use.
Most of the OHV area is south of CA 78, extending from the highway to the Mexican border. Vehicles are prohibited from the Algodones Outstanding Natural Area, which is reserved for hiking. In addition to the campgrounds, camping is permitted in all areas open to vehicle use in the recreation area. Stay limit fourteen days. Open all year."
