Wilson Trail

Wilson Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The trail climbs moderately the first 0.6 mile to the ridgetop, opening up panoramic vistas of the Vallecito Mountains to the southeast. It then gradually descends another 0.5 mile to a broad saddle adorned with a heavy mantle of juniper, cholla, and agave. After another 0.4 mile this former jeep trail tops out on a high ridge with an outcrop of sparkling light-colored granite boulders just to the right. This sandy track then levels, climbs, and levels again for another mile. This is a long east-west trail that follows the old Pinyon Ridge jeep trail (closed to vehicular travel), passing by 4,573-foot Mount Wilson to a rocky overlook above Borrego Valley."

"This long east-west trail follows the old Pinyon Ridge jeep track, which is now closed to vehicular travel. The trail and mountain are named for an early day Borrego Valley cattle rancher. The remoteness of a high desert setting combined with wide vistas make this a pleasant spot at which to linger. It is also a good turnaround point for a representative sample of the west-central region of the park, high in the Grapevine Hills. The trail traverses a transitional mix of desert and mountain flora, including yucca, cholla, manzanita, juniper, and pinyon pine. Note: Reaching the trailhead requires a high-clearance vehicle."

"Because access to the trailhead is off Old Culp Valley Road, which requires a four-wheel drive past the first 0.25 miles, the Wilson Trail offers plenty of solitude and peaceful communion with nature. You will probably see lots of overnight visitors during mild-weather months camping along Old Culp Valley Road. Once on the trail, though, your footsteps echo off surrounding brush in the otherwise-still silence of this long, fairly easy trek. (There are a few very short semi-steep sections.) Outstanding Features: Predominantly flat with some hills and dales, wildflowers in spring, horned lizards, rock formations, view of the desert valley and the Salton Sea."
