Font’s Point Drive Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This sandy desert wash route is a short and convenient opportunity to sample the park’s network of rudimentary backways. It ends at a lofty point with a spectacular view across a vast, forbidding expanse of the Colorado Desert. If you’ve never driven in a desert wash, this route provides an ideal introductory experience."

The drive starts out on S22 heading east from Borrego Springs. The Font's Point Wash road branches off from the right and is clearly marked. The drive itself up the wash is uneventful and the scenery is, well, bleak. You'll pass a turn to the left which you should not take. There is a small loop at the end of the road, and space to park. The drive should take less than a half hour.

You will need to hike just a hundred feet or so to the edge of the heavily eroded badlands to see the view. The cliffs drop straight off and seem to made made more of dried mud than rock, so beware.

The reason this drive gets 4 stars is the spectacular view. You have about a 270-degree view of the surrounding badlands, outlying desert areas and distant mountain ranges. Colors, while not Grand-Canyon-vivid, are varied and interesting. You'll want to spend more than a few moments soaking it all in.
