Elephant Trees Nature Trail

Elephant Trees Nature Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This well-signed self-guided nature trail climbs gently up a rock-lined wash, once home to a small “herd” of elephant trees. Unfortunately, the trees have all died in recent years. Even so, the history of the grove is notable, and the trail offers many other natural features."

This is a nice easy hike on mostly level (although still ragged with boulders and such) nature trail to what could be the last Elephant Tree in ABDSP. We got a nature trail guide at the Visitor Center which made for interesting stops along the way. The ranger at the center told us that there used to be about ten elephant trees out there, but that they had been wrecked by a flash flood a few years back. So the large tree shown in the pictures posted may very well be the last and only Elephant Tree. This trail has no shade until you get to the tree, so depending on what time of year you go, it could be a little bit brutal. You don't want to drive to the trail head without a high clearance vehicle either.
