While the low desert swelters, the temperature hovers in a more moderate register at Culp Valley, 3000 feet higher. This is the only designated camping area in Anza-Borrego where the heat on the cooler days of May, June, or September is quite bearable. July and August daytime temperatures are probably too warm for most people’s tastes—typically the 90s and 100s. Stark, grayish boulders are piled up all around the floor of Culp Valley, thrusting upward into an azure sky. The west wind blows capriciously, often whistling eerily through the rocks. Nearby, out of sight from the valley, is a hillside spring surrounded by an oasis of green grass and shrubs. It’s this kind of contrast that makes hiking here especially rewarding.
